Axios: he is worthy!
June 6, 2004

On Sunday, June 6, 2004, Jonathan Bastick was ordained to the deaconate by his Grace the Most Reverend Bishop John Michael Botean at Most Holy Trinity Byzantine Catholic Church in Chesterland, Ohio. The ordination Divine Liturgy commenced at 2 p.m. and was concelebrated by the following priests and deacons:

  • Hieromonk Albert Marflak, O.S.B. Administrator of Most Holy Trinity Byzantine Catholic Church where Jonathan serves. Hieromonk Albert is also the Prior of St. Andrew Abbey in Cleveland.

  • Very Reverend Archpriest John G. Petro, Rector of SS. Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Catholic Seminary and the deaconate formation program that Jonathan completed.

  • Rev. Emmanuel G. Samayoa, Rector of St. George Cathedral, Canton.

  • Very Rev. Andre Matthews, Pastor of St. Helena Parish in Cleveland and Vicar for Clergy.

  • Rev. Deacon Paul Simko - Metropolitan Archeparchy of Pittsburgh

  • Rev. Deacon John Hanchin - Metropolitan Archeparchy of Pittsburgh.

  • Subdeacon Paul Voida and Lector Ovidiu Marginean were the Master of Ceremonies

  • Serving were Paul Thayer and William Kostic.

  • James Dershaw was the cantor. Jim cantors at St. George Cathedral and is the finance officer for the Romanian Catholic Diocese.

  • Ushers were Paul Hlebek and Chris Kostiha.

Jonathan's wife, Elaine prepared a delicious banquet of homemade Romanian-Slavic foods served during the reception following the ordination. Parishioners and friends provided extra dishes and deserts. Jonathan looks forward to his service as a deacon to his parish and diocese. He has already started to develop a children's catechesis program at Most Holy Trinity Parish based on the Montessori Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. He has been most appreciative of the support and enthusiasm he has received from members of his parish. Jonathan is also participating in the CPE hospital chaplaincy-training program at the Cleveland Clinic for the summer of 2004. He credits his wife Elaine for supporting his journey in life and service to the Church.

We are pleased and honored to have Fr. Deacon Jonathan's enthusiastic commitment to our Diocese.
