Northern Moldova and Maramures Flooded
From the comfort of our homes we could see or hear about the difficult time some of our brothers and sisters had gone through due to extremely
heavy rain this late summer. Some of us experienced the loss of electricity, gas, water or even
less important commodities, such as cable, internet or phone connection.
And we got uneasy and anxious about it. What if we would have lost more, not to say all we had. But there are families who
actually saw their whole
house taken away. And
winter, with its frost, is
already around the corner.
On July 25th to 29th, the northern territories of
Romania suffered severe flooding. The worst
damage hit the county of Maramures, and the
Moldavian counties of Iasi, Neamt, Bacau,
Suceava, and Botosani.
The raging waters distressed about 27,000 people
and damaged some
6,000 homes and
100,000 acres of
agricultural lands.
About 1,000
families became
homeless overnight.
The Romanian government, both central and local
ones, and different charitable foundations offered
their help and support
during the disaster
days, and in the after-
math they try to repair
the affected homes
and build new ones to
replace those totally lost.
Our Diocese wants to join the efforts of our co-
nationals by offering the most urgent equipment
needed to face the cold winter soon to come.
Each of the about 1,000 homeless families was
promised a new house this fall, yet they would
still be needing:
- A stove for heating ($120.00)
- A cooking range ($80.00)
- Gas tank unit for cooking – 10 gal. ($10.00)
- Food and water ($50.00/month)
For just $250.00, the equivalent of the cable bill in
U.S. for three months, YOU can help a family in
Romania survive the incoming winter.
